One of things you notice as you travel around Malawi is the sheer number of green buildings along the highways. They are all branded TNM (Telekom Networks Malawi) the second largest mobile operator in the country, after Airtel.
At first I thought they were all TNM agents, until a cousin I asked told me it’s a way of advertising where TNM offers to paint the shops and in exchange use them as ‘billboards’. He didn’t say how much or if TNM pays anything to the shop owner.
Airtel (and other non-telecoms brands like Calrsberg) do it as well, but not with the same ‘everywhere’ feel TNM has taken it to. It’s all green along the highways and it actually looks and feels quite nice.
